Preserving Romania's Natural Heritage

At EcoNatura, our mission is to protect and restore Romania's diverse ecosystems while promoting sustainable living practices that benefit both nature and communities. We believe that ecological conservation and human prosperity can go hand in hand, creating a harmonious relationship between people and the environment.

Through research, education, and direct action, we strive to preserve biodiversity, combat climate change impacts, and ensure that Romania's natural treasures remain vibrant for generations to come. Our approach combines traditional ecological knowledge with cutting-edge science to develop solutions that respect both cultural heritage and environmental needs.

By 2026, we aim to restore 5,000 hectares of degraded land, protect 20 endangered species, and engage 100,000 Romanians in conservation activities. Together, we can create a future where humans and nature thrive in balance.

Our History

2010

Founding members of EcoNatura

EcoNatura was founded by a group of dedicated environmentalists and scientists concerned about rapid deforestation in the Carpathian Mountains. Beginning with just 12 members, the organization focused on documenting biodiversity and raising awareness about conservation issues in local communities.

2015

First major reforestation project

Our first major reforestation project was launched, successfully planting over 50,000 native trees in degraded areas of the Danube Delta. We established partnerships with three universities and began our citizen science program, engaging local communities in biodiversity monitoring and conservation efforts.

2020

Opening of EcoNatura's headquarters in Constanța

EcoNatura moved to our current headquarters in Constanța, establishing Romania's first zero-carbon environmental education center. Our team expanded to 45 full-time staff and over 500 regular volunteers. We launched our flagship "Blue Danube" initiative to address water pollution and protect aquatic ecosystems throughout the river basin.

Today

Current initiatives and projects

Today, EcoNatura operates across all regions of Romania with specialized programs in forest conservation, wetland restoration, sustainable agriculture, and environmental education. Our initiatives have helped protect over 30,000 hectares of critical habitat and reintroduced several locally extinct species. As we approach our 2026 goals, we continue to expand our impact through innovative approaches and strong community partnerships.

About Us

EcoNatura is a leading environmental conservation organization based in Constanța, Romania. We are dedicated to preserving the rich biodiversity and natural landscapes of our beautiful country through sustainable practices, community engagement, and innovative ecological solutions.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of ecologists, botanists, zoologists, environmental engineers, educators, and community organizers who work together to address complex environmental challenges. We believe that effective conservation requires both scientific expertise and deep community involvement, creating solutions that benefit both nature and people.

Since our founding, we have successfully implemented over 120 conservation projects across Romania, from the Carpathian forests to the Black Sea coast. Our approach combines traditional ecological knowledge with cutting-edge conservation science, ensuring that our solutions are both culturally appropriate and scientifically sound.

By 2026, we aim to become Eastern Europe's premier center for ecological research and conservation, with a special focus on climate resilience and ecosystem restoration. We invite you to join us in building a sustainable future for Romania and beyond.

Success Stories

Danube Delta Restoration

Danube Delta Restoration

Over a five-year period, our team successfully restored 1,200 hectares of degraded wetlands in the Danube Delta, Romania's most important biodiversity hotspot. This project reestablished natural water flows, removed invasive species, and reintroduced native vegetation, resulting in the return of 12 bird species that had previously abandoned the area.

Water quality improved by 65% within the restoration zone, and fish populations doubled within three years. Local communities now benefit from improved ecosystem services, including better fishing opportunities and increased ecotourism revenue. This project serves as a model for large-scale wetland restoration throughout Eastern Europe.

Carpathian Wildlife Corridor

Carpathian Wildlife Corridor

Our flagship conservation initiative created a 120 km wildlife corridor connecting fragmented forest habitats across the Carpathian Mountains. Through strategic land acquisition, conservation easements, and cooperation with 14 rural communities, we established a continuous protected corridor that allows safe movement for large mammals, including the endangered Carpathian lynx and brown bear.

Wildlife monitoring shows a 40% increase in animal movement between previously isolated populations, improving genetic diversity and population resilience. This project demonstrates how ecological connectivity can be maintained even in regions with significant human activity and development pressures.

Black Sea Coastal Cleanup

Black Sea Coastal Cleanup

Through our ongoing coastal stewardship program, we've removed over 75 tons of plastic waste from Romania's Black Sea beaches and implemented a comprehensive marine debris prevention strategy. Working with coastal communities, tourism businesses, and local governments, we've installed innovative waste capture systems at 28 key discharge points.

Beach monitoring shows a 70% reduction in new plastic accumulation, while water quality at target beaches has improved significantly. The program has also created 35 green jobs in coastal communities and strengthened local commitment to marine conservation through our educational outreach to 10,000 students annually.
